At the peak of ripeness at the end of September the nighttime harvest is called for Alma Serena’s Verdejo, grapes efficiently picked over the course of a few hours and by daylight are in low temperature stainless steel tanks already beginning the fermentation process. Fermentation over 3 weeks is followed by three months maturation on the lees to fill out the flavour profile and provide the fleshy texture this grape is renowned for.

Pale straw-yellow colour with greenish hues, the nose is complex and intense with a strong presence of the hay aromas characteristic of Verdejo, which give way to floral and fruit notes, pear, galia melon and white peach. Elegant, intense and deliciously rounded on the palate, with great acidic balance and a tangy, refreshing finish with hints of citrus peel and mango.

A lovely match for rich poultry dishes, roast chicken, turkey or goose.

Producer: Bodegas Peñafiel (Alma Serena)

Alma Serena wines are made on the golden mile in the small town of Peñafiel in the Ribera del Duero. This a boutique producer, with a focus on quality, not quantity. Aside from the Verdejo which comes from neighbouring Rueda, all the vineyards, dotted around Peñafiel, are planted with Tinta Fina, Ribera del Duero's Tempranillo synonym.

The quality focus sees harvesting at night, manual grape selection on tables, cold maceration of the wines prior to fermentation to extract the best colour, fruit components and a fresh balancing acidity throughout the wines, and plenty of quality oak barrels. Even basic roble sees six months in French oak, with the Reserva getting over three years.
