Alma Serena Ribera del Duero Reserva 2019

Description

A blend of the native Tinta Fina (Tempranillo), Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, hand-harvested from the estate’s Peñafiel and Castrillo de Duero vineyards at around 900m elevation.

Grapes are manually sorted and destemmed, with an initial cold maceration followed by a two week fermentation in stainless steel, a post-ferment maceration of 4 weeks, and a further six weeks resting on fine lees. The wine is then aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels for 40 months (yeah, just the three and a half years!).

Deep black-cherry in colour, almost opaque, very expressive on the nose with crème de cassis, damson and fruitcake notes, with massive wafts of pencil shavings and vanilla, and more subtle notes leather, tobacco leaf and mint, it’s a magnificent aroma set. This is blockbuster stuff, full and intense, ripe black cherry and dried black fruit lead the way, followed by balsamic, plum jam and sweet clove flavours, with complementary hints of smoky charcoal, stony minerals and soft leather. Powerful but refined, very classy.

Producer: Bodegas Peñafiel (Alma Serena)

Alma Serena wines are made on the golden mile in the small town of Peñafiel in the Ribera del Duero. This a boutique producer, with a focus on quality, not quantity. Aside from the Verdejo which comes from neighbouring Rueda, all the vineyards, dotted around Peñafiel, are planted with Tinta Fina, Ribera del Duero's Tempranillo synonym.

The quality focus sees harvesting at night, manual grape selection on tables, cold maceration of the wines prior to fermentation to extract the best colour, fruit components and a fresh balancing acidity throughout the wines, and plenty of quality oak barrels. Even basic roble sees six months in French oak, with the Reserva getting over three years.
