Alma Serena Ribera del Duero Crianza 2021

A blend of the native Tinta Fina (Tempranillo), Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, harvested by hand using 15kg cases, the grapes are manually sorted and destemmed once in the winery. An initial cold maceration is followed by a two week fermentation in stainless steel, followed by a post-ferment maceration of 20 days. The wine is then aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels for 20 months.

Intense purple colour with cherry red hues, the nose a heady mix of berry fruits, balsamic and exotic spices notes, coffee, star anise and coconut. Mouth-filling and quite powerful, packed with dry black fruits and dark savoury spice, but nonetheless elegant and easy to drink, a fine coffee bean minerality and milk chocolate tannins just glide on the palate, with a long, complex, polished finish.

Producer: Bodegas Peñafiel (Alma Serena)

Alma Serena wines are made on the golden mile in the small town of Peñafiel in the Ribera del Duero. This a boutique producer, with a focus on quality, not quantity. Aside from the Verdejo which comes from neighbouring Rueda, all the vineyards, dotted around Peñafiel, are planted with Tinta Fina, Ribera del Duero's Tempranillo synonym.

The quality focus sees harvesting at night, manual grape selection on tables, cold maceration of the wines prior to fermentation to extract the best colour, fruit components and a fresh balancing acidity throughout the wines, and plenty of quality oak barrels. Even basic roble sees six months in French oak, with the Reserva getting over three years.
