When you get to the top of the hill where the winery is situated, it is easy to see why it is called ‘Poggiobello’ (beautiful hill): the view embraces 90 hectares of vineyards, arranged in orderly rows on terraces, facing south in the direction of the sea and northwards towards the white-topped Alps.
The land here is the key to the great wines produced. The largest single land-owner within the esteemed Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC, most of the Poggiobello estate is given to vineyards, every twist and turn in the undulating landscape carefully considered for its suitability for one grape over another. Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Refosco, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc are grown here at an altitude ranging from 80 to 250 metres.
The cellars were renovated in 2004, carved into the hill beneath the winery and affording a year-round temperature of 17 degrees, along with the addition of temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and a barrel room for ageing the estate’s red wines.
