Cantina Valle Tritana

Driving through the quiet mountain village of Ofena in the tranquil Tritana Valley, you would never think that it was once a rich, thriving city on a major throughfare connecting Rome to the Adriatric Sea. In fact, Ofena, or Aufinum as it was known then, was an important city along the Via Claudia Nova, a key strategic artery and trading route for the Romans. Archaeological remains such as large buildings, mosaics and tombs testify to the importance and wealth of the city in that period, and there’s evidence of winemaking too, part of a rich agricultural heritage in an area blessed by natural resources.

Recognised as one of the oldest settlements of the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo vine, the Tritana Valley remains of huge cultural, agricultural and economic importance. The area has considerable ecological diversity, from oak and chestnut forests to flowering prairies along the shores, and sustainable management of this biodiversity is seen as crucial in maintaining the balance, health and wealth of the valley.

Cantina Valle Tritana is a state of the art winery in Ofena with vineyards around the village and dotted across the valley, making the most of the diverse and varied terroir with tailored plantings of Montepulciano, Trebbiano, Pecorino and Passerina. Vineyards are sustainably managed with minimal intervention and organic farming principles, with grapes harvested by hand to minimise impact on the land. Cantina Valle Tritana’s wines are the modern expression of ancient lands, grapes, culture and practices.
