Cantina Gorgo was established in 1975 by Alberta and Roberto Bricolo, turning their backs on respective family businesses to establish a winery between Verona and Lake Garda. Alberta and Roberto’s daughter Roberta took over running of Gorgo in 2014, with her own vision of the future that began with converting the family’s 53 hectares of vines into certified organic vineyards.
Custoza is the local DOC, with the winery situated just a few kilometres from the village. Custoza is hilly, stony terrain, rich in calcium carbonate with a high pH, with currents from the nearby Lake Garda creating a Mediterranean microclimate not typical for northern Italy. This combination of growing elements, its terroir, is what gives Custoza’s white wines their distinguishing characteristics — minerality, balanced acidity and great flavour.
Beyond fully organic winemaking, Gorgo is dedicated to sustainability and nurturing the natural environment around them. Practices include planting hedges and native vegetation to encourage the insect population and other wildlife, green fertilising, biological methods of pest control, no animal products in wine production, and waste and recycling management including a water preservation system in the winery.
