Our top 10 reds of the year

Following on from our teaser post yesterday, today we reveal our very own wine hit parade: our top 10 reds and top 10 whites of the year, as voted by our customers in terms of what they’ve been buying in 2011.
First up, our top 10 reds, so in reverse order we begin our countdown:
10.  Château Bauduc Clos des Quinze 2008
When we first introduced Château Bauduc it was all about Gordon Ramsay’s house white, the Bordeaux Blanc Sec, but this silky, classic Bordeaux blend of merlot and cabernet has won many fans.

9.  Bleasdale ‘The Broad-side’ 2009
A masterful blend from Australia’s second oldest winery combining shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and Bleasdale’s signature grape malbec.

8.  Langmeil ‘Three Gardens’ SMG 2009
From Langmeil Mastercraftsman Paul Lindner. The SMG stands for the blend of shiraz, mourvedre and grenache, although we’ve given it the nickname ‘SO My God’.

7.  Santa Alicia Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
This would be higher but for the fact that it shares huge popularity with it’s cousin Carménère and Malbec varietals in the same range, both just outside the top 10 themselves.

6.  Gregorina Sangiovese Superiore 2009
Typical, food-friendly sangiovese: ripe red fruits, soft spice, tart acidity and savoury tannins. The perfect wine with pasta bolognese.

5.  Dignité Syrah 2008
Rich, powerful and huge complexity for the price, this was once one of our best kept secrets. Not any more.

4.  Santa Gloria Merlot 2010
Dark berries, plum and pillow soft tannins combine in this smooth, easy-drinking, everyday merlot.

3.  Moulin de Gassac Classic Rouge 2010

Classic syrah/grenache blend and the entry red from the iconic Mas de Daumas Gassac and an instant hit when we introduced it at the start of the year.

2.  Cuvée Jean-Paul Rouge 2010
Our house red for 3 years and another classic Rhône blend of syrah and grenache, we think the best vintage in our time importing it.

And our top-selling red wine of the year:
1.  La Mano Mencia Roble 2009
Who would have predicted? The relatively unknown mencia grape, our top-selling red of 2011. This wine has scored so well with our customers principally because it punches so far above it’s weight in terms of price versus quality. Rich, savoury, bargain.

Our Top 10 whites follow shortly.
