MURRAY-DARLING is the second-largest wine region in Australia (25,000 hectares / 1,000 growers), responsible for up to one-quarter of the country’s annual crush. Although it is divided neatly down the middle by the Murray River, the region’s vineyards are mostly situated on the southern, Victorian side. The climate is hot and dry (the GI’s unofficial name is ‘Sunraysia’), with low disease pressure and high yields of healthy grapes being standard.
The Spee’Wah range is inspired by ‘Crooked Mick‘ – one of Australia’s most popular mythical heroes. Tales of misshapen Mickey have been told around bushfires since the first Europeans started getting lost in the Outback. They tell of a wild, larger than life character that lived in the Spee’Wah, close to the Speewa cable ferry that crosses the Murray River north of Swan Hill, and home to the vines that made these wines.

Sweet peach on the nose, with fleshy lychee, apricot and lemon candy on the palate. Characterful, with a tingly, minerally spine.
The Spee’wah Crooked Mick Cabernet-Petit Verdot 2011 €13.99
Petit Verdot, originally from Bordeaux, is a violet and graphite scented red grape that provides colour and tannin in blends. This blended example is gorgeous with duck.
