THE CLARE VALLEY is the most northerly GI (appellation) of the Mount Lofty Ranges zone of South Australia, around 125km north of Adelaide. Known for its critically-acclaimed dry Riesling, it also produces premium Cabernet, Shiraz and Grenache. The climate is broadly continental, with warm summer days and chilly nights that help the grapes to retain freshness. The Clare is a quality-focused region whose wineries tend to be more boutique than mass market. Tim Adams, a regular visitor to Ireland, is one of its most respected names.
Tim Adams ‘Foxlee’ Single-Vineyard Riesling 2012 €16.99
For Riesling fans, the Clare is a must-try region. This superb example (which was featured in The Sunday Times recently) shows very bright, lifted Riesling character, with pronounced notes of piquant lime, lemon and grapefruit. The overall impression is cool and invigorating, with textbook linear acidity and a seamless palate that refreshes and delights. Dry and fruity. Enjoy as an aperitif or have with ceviche, roast pork belly or onion tart.
Tim Adams ‘Bluey’s Block’ Single-Vineyard Grenache 2009 €16.99
An unputdownable Grenache that offers amazing pleasure! Instantly appealing red with lifted, exotic aromas and a succulent palate of glossy black fruit, Ribena, Chinese five spice and smoky bacon. The tannins are sweet and round, while a clean line of acidity balances the lush, nectarous fruit. Beautiful! Drink on its own or try with duck in plum sauce or charred chimichurri steak.
