Last week we were deeply saddened to lose a dear friend and one of the founding team, when Curious mascot and much-loved family pet Molly passed away.
Molly was customer meeter and greeter in our original Bandon warehouse when we started in 2008, moving with us to our current Kinsale Road store in 2010 to charm a whole new customer base. Her usual position in Bandon was in the sun-trap right outside the warehouse entrance, where she would greet customers with a wag of the tail and a curious sniff, and was a central part of the warm welcome that saw newcomers become regulars.
When we moved to Cork, our proximity to Smyths Toys proved an inspiration as parents were dragged from one favourite shop to another, where young kids could reacquaint themselves with “the wine doggy”. Affable, gentle and eternally patient with everyone from doting pensioners to over-enthusiastic toddlers, Molly personified everything we wanted to create with Curious Wines: a warm welcome to all.
A faithful and enthusiastic companion in all areas of life, Molly walked most of Ireland’s mountains, from Kerry’s MacGillicuddy Reeks to the mountains of Mourne, over a life spanning ten energetic years. Diagnosed with a level 4 heart murmur early last year, Molly retired from shop duties just before Christmas but continued to keep an eye on things as Mike’s permanent side-kick.
Last week, as Mike worked from home, Molly sauntered into the garden, found a comfortable spot to lie down, and went to sleep in the West Cork sunshine.
Beloved family pet, first-born, best friend, wine dog, Queen of Carrauntoohil – Curious Molly, we salute you. RIP, wee pet.

RIP Moll Doll xox
I was so sorry to hear about the lovely Molly. We sadly had to put our dear cat Laurence to sleep last Wednesday. He was our family. He was 21 years old and we had him since he was 2 weeks old. Needless to say, we are heartbroken and lonely without him – but how lucky we all are to have had those furry friends in our lives x
21 years old! Good lord, Tanya, that is some age! Cavalier’s don’t have much of a life span but Molly did very well, and she was in great form right up ’til the end. Sorry to hear about Laurence. Sad times indeed.
