Gigondas is a Grenache-based, southern Rhone appellation that can make both red and rosé wine. (In practice it’s mostly the former.) The wine is often likened to Chateauneuf-du-Pape, just 17km to the southwest, but, while Gigondas isn’t cheap, it does generally cost less than its celebrity sibling. Try with good farmhouse cheddar, game pie or pork and fennel casserole.
