All bottles of Chianti Classico are marked by the DOCG’s black cockerel logo. Legend has it that in the 13th century the warring provinces of Florence and Siena agreed to a race to solve their perennial border disputes. The idea was that when the first cockerel crowed at dawn, each city would dispatch its fastest rider for the rival city, and where the two riders met would decide the new boundary. The crafty Florentines got a head start by starving their bird to make him sing earlier, weighting the outcome in their favour. Sneaky!
