You know that feeling you get when someone has an infectious grin? Almost as soon as you see them, you can’t help but smile back at them? That’s Johnny Quarisa: highly esteemed winemaker, wine judge, and someone who believes in not taking life too seriously. He’s larger than life, with a generous appreciation for wines. You can imagine he’s great to have at a party—just like his wines.
Quarisa is a winery that is based on family values, hobbies, heritage, laughter and fun. High school sweethearts John and Josephine Quarisa live by the saying, ‘Passion is Everything’, and they pour this belief into every bottle, glass and drop they produce. They have built a career, life and family around their passions, laughing and loving every step of the way.
John has been immersed in the Australian wine business for over 30 years. Starting with a degree in wine science, he took to the business like a duck to water.
Before setting up his own wine business, John was chief winemaker for some of the largest wine companies in the southern hemisphere, including McWilliams Wines, Casella and Nugan Estate. And he has won both the Melbourne Jimmy Watson Trophy and the Adelaide Stodart Trophy.
In addition, he has been an international and Australian wine show judge, working the circuit for many years, all the while cheekily keeping an eye on the competition. He has judged for world-acclaimed competitions such as the International Wine & Spirits Competition, Mundus Vini and the Shanghai International Wine Challenge, among many others.
It’s safe to say this guy knows his wine from his grapes.
Aside from these incredible achievements, John and Josephine have built a wine company that is based on everything they love about wine. Their very successful family business is based on using grapes from various parts of New South Wales and South Australia in leased spaces. They source fruit from various established regions throughout Australia to craft full-flavoured wines of excellent value. They pride themselves on creating wines that are critically acclaimed in competitions, but also loved by the consumer.
In recent years, their main objective has been to ensure that the quality of Australian wine continues to improve, with a huge focus on the export market. Right now, they are exporting to the UK, Canada, Denmark, Sweden, Malaysia, Indonesia and Japan. And Ireland, of course.
John and Josephine have also started to involve their children more in the business, as they are now all in their mid-20s and have been surrounded by vineyards since birth—a pretty good pedigree.
They are continuously growing their portfolio with wines from all over Australia. We can confidently guarantee that there is a wine in the Quarisa range for everybody.
