Described by Jancis Robinson as having “the best kept secrets of the wine world”, Austria’s reputation for excellence is quickly revealing itself. Production is concentrated to the east of the country, the northern part (confusingly known as Lower Austria) producing racy, aromatic whites, with the south capable of producing some outstanding reds. Many of the grapes are indigenous and signature varietals for Austria, like Grüner Veltliner, Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent, but international varietals like Riesling, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc (known as Weissburgunder here) produce world class examples.
