Best of the Best 2010 – Peter Saunders

Pale straw with light green hue. The nose has a lovely strong minerality with hints of lime and grapefruit zest. Gunflint with a real leafy/basil lift round out the aromas.

Peter Saunders: "Sound, yummy flavours from Marisco’s own vineyard with the Waihopai River flowing past. Feels fresh like the swift river, plenty of sound fruit that tastes cared for and ready to be enjoyed. Versatile with white meat courses or nibbles." (Best of the Best 2010)

The long dry summer was coupled with some of the coolest nights experienced during the growing season in the Waihopai Valley. The net result is a powerful fruit driven palate showing explosive flavours of lime, flintiness with hints of passionfruit. It is a wine of balance and elegance displaying a seamlessness rounding off a superb Sauvignon Blanc of this style.

Temperature controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks with carefully selected yeast strains.

2011 vintage rated 4/5 in Cuisine Magazine: "Marisco’s King’s Favour found favour with our panel. The Waihopai-grown wine has a galloping, swashbuckling personality, with herbal and ripe fruit flavours splashed large along with plenty of acidic cut and thrust. It’s quintessentially Marlborough."

In 1204, despite apparently using Lundy Island as a base for piracy against North Devon traders and along the English coast, one William de Marisco was strangely appointed to be in charge of a number of the Royal Galleys - whose very purpose was to defend against such piracy.

William was also granted the Manor of Braunton (in Devon) by King John. Both these factors were surprising evidence of the King's Favour.
