Niepoort is an independent family business that dates from 1842. After 5 generations it is headed today by the high-profile Dirk Niepoort.

RUBY is the most widely produced style of port. The term 'Ruby' isn't actually officially regulated; until the 1960s, it just indicated a bulk-produced port. However, the trade now seems to have reached a consensus on the style; youthful, fiery and fruity. Unlike Vintage, Ruby is a blend of young wines from multiple vintages. As they are filtered, and sometimes pasteurized, Ruby Ports don't improve in bottle, or require decanting.

From low-yielding vines (average age 30 years) grown in mineral-rich schist soils in the Cima Corga subregion of Portugal's Douro valley. The blend is a classic Port mix of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo) and others. The grapes were hand-harvested and trodden by foot in stone lagares (troughs).
