16.5/20: Chris Kissack, The Wine Doctor

Dark and opaque, with a confident, ripe nose of glossy dark berry fruit and spice box. The full bodied, structured palate boasts fine-grained tannins, clean acidity, and intense notes of mulberry, violet and fruitcake. Powerful, masculine style.

Decant if possible and enjoy alongside simple roast lamb and root vegetables.

2010 is arguably the finest Bordeaux vintage since 1982 and Bauduc proprietor Gavin Quinney says the 2010 Clos de Quinze is his best yet: "A powerful, juicy Bordeaux with plenty of life ahead of it [but] drinking all too easily now. Given the ripeness of the grapes, the wine comes in at close to 14% alcohol - don't let that put you off as it is tasty, smooth and very well balanced."

The Côtes de Bordeaux appellation was created in 2009 to unite four geographically-spread but similar - and easily-confused - ACs from the vast Bordeaux region: Premiere Côtes de Blaye, Côtes de Castillon, Côtes de France, and Premieres Côtes de Bordeaux. The goal was to simplify things for both consumers and for wine marketers from these regions, an objective that has largely been met.
