An elegant wine with aromas of mixed berries, dark chocolate and violets. The palate is smooth with blackcurrant and spicy oak flavours and finishes with fine chalky tannins.
Enjoy with a rack of lamb or beef steak.
James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion: "Bright, deep crimson-purple, this has clear-cut varietal character with blackcurrant and a dash of dark chocolate. The tannins are soft and ripe, the French oak subtle. An attractive now-or-later style." (89 points)
Lar Veale (sourgrapes.ie), on the 2008 vintage, July 2011: "The Mulberry Tree Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 from Bleasdale is by no means austere. Nor is it a fruit bomb. It’s not trying to be Bordeaux, it’s confident enough to be proudly Australian. It has the classic Cabernet cassis, plenty of blackcurrant, which is backed up with a nice acidity and good tannic grip. Superb balance, no one aspect of it overshadowing another. Overall, quite a rich wine, hedonistic. Great with hard cheeses, particularly Parmesan and BBQ. Tasted blind I would have put this as a 2001, the flavours all being nicely integrated and secondary flavours starting to come through (violets, prunes, black tea) but in another year or two this will really sing." The deep alluvial floodplains of Langhorne Creek are home to some of Australia's best soils in which to grow premium grapes. Frank Potts realised this when he established Bleasdale in 1850. The Mulberry Tree vineyard, named after the ancient tree growing in the middle of the block, consistently produces fruit of rare quality.
While many South Australian family wineries died with their entrepreneurial founders, Bleasdale, established in 1850, still survives proudly today.Through the challenges of the 1930s and 1940s when Britain's Imperial Preference for Australian wine was removed; the 1950s when Australian tastes swung from fortifieds to table wine; and through the 1980s and 1990s when consumers demanded Chardonnay and Cabernet not Verdelho and Shiraz, the Potts family has changed, innovated and persisted.Other than Yalumba it is the longest running family owned winery in Australia, a proud heritage of commitment and dedication to an industry and a region.
