Unctuous late-night wine with lusciously-sweet characters of ripe black cherry, fruit pastille, cinnamon, mocha and caramel, with a warm, spirity finish. Hugely enjoyable - more, please!
A top-notch option for the end of any good meal - shared with chatty friends, cheese, dark chocolate and a crackling fire!
Woodstock has a proud tradition of after-dinner wines dating back to the 1950’s when Doug Collett started his winemaking career. His son Scott Collett keeps the fine old “Ports” maturing in Doug’s original barrels and also occasionally makes single vintage fortified styles, such as this.
Low yielding, very sweet Grenache grapes were harvested at Woodstock in March of the growing season. After crushing and partial fermentation, pure grape spirit was added to strengthen the juice to over 18%. The fortified wine was then stored in old oak barrels for a spell before bottling. Residual sugar 133 grams per litre. Et Voila!
Woodstock is based in South Australia's McLaren Vale, arguably the country's top wine region for big, strapping reds (although let's hope Barossa isn't listening.) Modern founder Doug Collett (RIP) caught the wine bug while flying Spitfires over Europe for the Royal Australian Air Force during World War 2, admiring the vineyards below as he went and savouring the local wines while on leave - as you do! Son Scott Collett is the current head.
