Woodstock 'The Octogenarian' 2013

McLaren Vale, Australia

A red with a lot going on, this lavish Aussie offers up big, rich flavours of raspberry jam, cola, kirsch and nougat, all wrapped in a frame of smoky oak and dusty tannins. Hearty and obvious, with winning charm and smoothness. Beautiful!

Try with tea-smoked duck breast, blue cheese or charred steak.

From the Blewitt Springs part of McLaren Vale, this sumptuous red blend is 88% Grenache and 12% Tempranillo from some of the very old vines that this part of Australia is famous for. Grenache and Tempranillo are natural complements to each other, often being blended together across much of Iberia, including in Rioja.

Woodstock is located in South Australia's McLaren Vale, arguably the country's top wine region for big, strapping reds. Modern founder Doug Collett caught the wine bug while flying Spitfires over Europe for the Royal Australian Air Force during World War 2, admiring the vineyards below as he went and savouring the local wines while on leave - as you do! Son Scott Collett is the current boss.

Hobart Mercury

Graeme Philips

"Sun-drenched style high on alcohol and the raspberry sweetness of super-ripe Grenache...saved from being Port-like by first-rate winemaking and a dash of Tempranillo."
