Gold Medal: Wrest Point Royal Hobart Wine Show
On the nose, Woodstock ‘Pilot’s View’ Shiraz shows lots of juicy dark berries, spice and an underlying earthiness, a characteristic which is distinctively evident in wines from McLaren Vale. The palate is a well balanced journey with a burst of red berries and plums, intermingled with subtle vanilla bean, mixed spices and traces of well integrated oak. Supple, savoury, textured, fine grain tannins leave you wanting more.
Campbell Mattinson, Wine Front, October 2010: "This Shiraz from Woodstock is only available "on premise" (i.e. only by stumbling across it on a restaurant wine list) which is a pity, because it's a lovely red. It's hearty and rich but it's nicely finessed too. It tastes of blackberries and bright raspberries and carries a delicious clip of coffeed, vanillin, smoky oak. It's a very classy McLaren Vale Shiraz. There's a spot of spiciness and maybe even the odd truffle-like note. Tannin is very, very fine. I loved drinking it." 94 points
The Pilots View Shiraz is deliberately made to a style to be consumed as a companion to food. All the fruit for this wine is grown at Woodstock, which enables the grapes to be picked at the right moment. Scott and Collett were looking for more earthy notes and savoury tannins to complement the juicy nature of the Shiraz varietal. Six months on its lees in barrels contribute to its supple tannin texture. The wines is aged for 14 months in equal parts of both new French and American oak barrels, which adds complexity to the wine.
Flying Spitfires during WWII, Douglas Collett A.M was privileged to a pilot's eye-view of the vineyards of Europe. Returning home, Doug saw the future for an Australian table wine industry, moving on from fortified styles. Equipped with animation, initiative and perseverance, Doug planted many vineyards and made wines in many regions. He loved the natural beauty and robust flavours of McLaren Vale, acquiring Woodstock Estate in 1973. Doug’s own flight helmet represents the vision and passion of this inspirational man whose philosophy was “the glass is always half full”, so lets fill it up!”
Woodstock wines have been created by both Scott Collett and Ben Glaetzer since 1999; Scott in the vineyards, Ben in the cellars and jointly in the tasting room. Their philosophy is to capture the essence of McLaren Vale, ensuring absolute quality at every stage from the vineyards to the bottle.
