McLaren Vale, Australia

Deep and dashing purple, the nose explodes with dark morello cherries, juniper, spearmint and dark chocolate. In classic Montepulciano style, exceptionally round, robust, velvety and generous - sexy stuff!

Good with venison, spaghetti puttanesca or juicy roast duck.

Traditional winemaking here, with leisurely maturation in older, 300-litre oak vats, allowing tannins time to melt away and complex, mellow flavours to develop. Montepulciano is an Italian grape (the country's 3rd most-planted) that is most associated with the central region of Abruzzo. McLaren Vale, a premium region 35km south of Adelaide, enjoys a perfect Mediterranean climate, with sea breezes helping to moderate temperatures during the summer.

Woodstock is located in South Australia's McLaren Vale, arguably the country's top wine region for big, strapping reds. Modern founder Doug Collett (now dead) caught the wine bug while flying Spitfires over Europe for the Royal Australian Air Force during World War 2, admiring the vineyards below as he went and savouring the local wines while on leave - as you do! Son Scott Collett is the current patriarch.

"Shows the potential of Italy's third-most-planted grape beyond Abruzzo."

James Halliday

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

"Tons of eucalyptus-laced cassis and baked cherry fruit dotted with notes of pepper and earth. Full bodied and rich....It finishes long."
