More aspirational Albariño producers like to try their hand at an oaked, "leesy" wine (uncommon in the area), and Pazo de Villarei's luscious effort, aged on its lees (yeasts) for six months in French oak, is a triumph - truly, one for the connoisseur! The vineyards of Pazo de Villarei cling to the slopes of the Val do Salnés, between Arousa and Pontevedra - chosen long ago by the Celts for their unbeatable location for wine growing.

Albariño is synonymous with the misty region of Rías-Baixas in Galicia, NW Spain, where it makes up 90% of plantings. The DO (appellation) is named after the flooded valleys - rías - that infiltrate the coast for distances of up to 30 kilometres.
