Trambusti Brunello di Montalcino 2009

Tuscany, Italy

Classic garnet appearance with a dazzling bouquet of red fruit jam and sandalwood, with hints of pepper. The chewy wash has a solid structure, with muscular tannins and rich, complex flavours of black cherry, espresso and new leather. Beautiful effort.

Decant for an hour and pair with pot-roast pheasant or bistecca alla Fiorentina (Tuscan-style steak).

Siena-based Brunello di Montalcino, Italy's first DOCG (1980, alongside Barolo), is one of Italy's (and the world's) most prestigious wines. Meaning 'little dark one', Brunello is the local name for Sangiovese Grosso, the large-berried form of Sangiovese that grows in the area. The local consorzio's disciplinare di produzione states that Brunello must be made from only Sangiovese and be aged for at least four years before sale.

Trambusti, based in the province of Florence, was founded in 1934 by Orlando Trambusti and is today run by his son Giovanni and grandchildren Giacomo, Veronica and Francesco. The estate's 52 hectares (which include gorgeous olive groves) are at an average height of 350 meters above sea level, an altitude that is considered just about perfect for viticulture in Tuscany. Made from 100% Sangiovese, aged in large Slavonian oak vats.
