Terrai 'C' Old-Vine Carignan 2011

Cariñena, Spain

Powerful red with tremendous weight and heft. Unbelievably dark, inky with sumptuous characters of black fruit jam, new oak, vanilla, tar and charcoal vying for supremacy. A firm tannic backbone and stony, minerally seam provides great structure. Wow!
Decant for a couple of hours if possible and enjoy with charred ribeye or slow-roasted pork belly.
This is a very fine Carignan (known locally sometimes as Mazuelo or Cariñena) that's dry-farmed (i.e. no irrigation - better wine!) at 600 metres altitude. The vines are over 30 years old, and older vines give better wine than younger specimens as they produce a lower volume of more concentrated, more flavoursome berries. Grapes are hand harvested in early September and only the best, first-pressed, portion of the juice makes the cut.
Cariñena is a DO/appellation (wine region) in Aragon, northern Spain. Most of its vineyards are located at fairly high altitude - 400–800m - and are scattered along the plains of the River Ebro. The climate is continental, with big temperature swings that help the grapes preserve freshness and aroma, and a brisk northerly wind – the Cierzo – that helps keep the vines perky, productive and super healthy.
