Something of a beast, this deeply-coloured claret boasts viscous tears and confident aromas of blackberry and crushed mint. The muscular wash takes no prisoners, with obvious tannin and acidity, filled out nicely by a delicious melange of blackcurrant, bitter chocolate, cigar box and salty minerals. Big stuff!

Decant for an hour and drink with minty lamb cutlets and roast spuds in goose fat.

This is a classic AC Bordeaux blend comprising 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, made by Maison Sichel, owner-managers of Château Angludet in high-end ‘left-bank’ region Margaux. Although Bordeaux-the-wine-region is prestige itself, many of the reds trading under the basic 'AC Bordeaux' appellation are instantly forgettable. (Or, worse, memorable for the wrong reasons!) This one's brilliant - 'siriusly' good, you might say. (Sorry!)

Sirius - the Dog Star - is the brightest star in the night sky. Its name stems from the Greek for 'sparkling' or 'scorching'. Among the ancient Romans, the hottest part of the year was associated with the rising of the Dog Star, a link that survives in the contemporary expression 'dog days', referring to the sultry days of mid- and late-summer.
