Full, complex, lightly oaked Shiraz from Australia's Limestone Coast.
A small amount of oak in the winery and extended time on skins helped build the palate into a classic Australian Shiraz, full and expressive with complex aromas. Fresh blackberries, blueberries and mulberries give this wine a dominant fruit character but carried by silky tannins and a savoury texture.
Established by friends Geoff Hardy, Grant Tilbrook and Scott Collett of Woodstock fame, for the first 22 years Wirrega Vineyards provided top quality fruit for some of Australia’s most iconic wine brands. In 2005 they decided the fruit was too good to sell and so came about the Wirrega Vineyards label. Sfera is a celebration of those little dark spheres hanging from the vines, aiming for the greatest intensity of fruit and expression of the varietal.
‘Wirrega’ was the name of an Aboriginal clan comprising 8 or so groups of the Jackegilbrab tribe. They inhabited the district, living sustainably on the bountiful land that grows huge gum trees. Earlier farmers cleared most of these trees but in buying the property in 1993, the Wirrega team left the remaining trees intact and planted vines around them. They also planted many native trees along the water courses and billabongs amongst the current vineyard.
