Dolcetto is a black grape from the Piedmont region of northwest Italy, home of Barolo and Barbaresco. This peculiar wine sets a new, more savoury style for the varietal in Australia. The colour sets the tone with double skin contact building the silky tannin line. Liquorice and dark chocolate keep the palate on the savoury not sweet scale, with bright cherry tones and a hint of lavender. A fascinating, expressive and really pleasurable wine.
Established by friends Geoff Hardy, Grant Tilbrook and Scott Collett of Woodstock fame, for the first 22 years Wirrega Vineyards provided top quality fruit for some of Australia’s most iconic wine brands. In 2005 they decided the fruit was too good to sell and so came about the Wirrega Vineyards label. Sfera is a celebration of those little dark spheres hanging from the vines, aiming for the greatest intensity of fruit and expression of the varietal.
‘Wirrega’ was the name of an Aboriginal clan comprising 8 or so groups of the Jackegilbrab tribe. They inhabited the district, living sustainably on the bountiful land that grows huge gum trees. Earlier farmers cleared most of these trees but in buying the property in 1993, the Wirrega team left the remaining trees intact and planted vines around them. They also planted many native trees along the water courses and billabongs amongst the current vineyard.
