Almost four years in the making, this classic Tawny is richly evolved, mature, complex and very more-ish!
Tawny Port starts out like a Ruby Port but then spends an extended period in old oak casks to mature and soften. As the casks are porous, some of the wine evaporates, concentrating flavours and allowing oxidation to occur, a process that changes the colour of the wine from purple to reddish-brown, or tawny.
This fine tawny has a classic brick-red appearance, with a rich, velvety mouthfeel and gorgeous, sweet flavours of fig, caramel, almond and stewed strawberries. Serve lightly chilled with dried fruits, nuts and mild cheeses, or savoury desserts. In Port's biggest export market, France, Tawny is popular as an aperitif.
The Leite family settled in Poiares Seara, in Portugal's now renowned Douro wine and Port region, in the late 18th century, immediately planting vineyards, olive groves and almond trees, some of which survive to this day. Quinta Seara d'Ordens was derived from the military commander son, who based himself at the estate (quinta) and gave orders (ordens) to the soldiers under his command.
Over two hundred years later the estate remains in the Leite family, with João Leite Moreira the latest custodian overseeing production of high quality DOC Douro wines and continuing a long tradition of producing outstanding Ports.
