Caravan Durif 2014

South Eastern Australia, Australia

Super-generous personality with a lovely dark-ruby colour and rich, warm aromas of blackberry, plum pudding and soy, with secondary notes of chocolate and menthol. Full on the palate, with ripe tannins and a long, jammy finish. Yum!

Very tasty with sweet and sour pork or other rich, sweetish Chinese takeaway-style food.

Durif - known as Petite Sirah in the Americas - is a black grape that's named after its French discoverer, Dr. Francois Durif. The berries are small and deeply pigmented, meaning the resulting wines are inky and structured (firm tannins, acidity) - the wines are surprisingly good candidates for medium-term ageing. The variety is best suited to hot, dry regions - inland Oz, Israel, California. In the US Petite Sirah has its own fan club, called 'P.S., I love you!'

Caravan Petite Sirah is made by Italian-Australian John Quarisa, a larger-than-life character whose wines invariably deliver buckets of pleasure for minimal financial outlay. The wine is a blend of fruit juice from across a number of different Australian GIs (Geographical Indications - the continent's answer to Europe's appellations), meaning that it carries the broad South Eastern Australia designation.
