Dao, Portugal

Crisp, juicy style with lots of fresh fruit - cool damson, ripe strawberry, black cherry, raspberry - and flower (violet?) flavours. Really silky and drinkable, with brilliant local character. Well done!

Chill lightly and enjoy with roast suckling pig or, if that's too much trouble, normal pork chops.

This great-value, characterful Portuguese red wine is a skillful blend of Jaen (Mencia), Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo) and Alfrocheiro Preto. The vines grow in clay-granite soils and maturation of the wine comprises 6 months in barrel

Dão, south of the Douro/Port region and encircled by protective mountain ranges, is one of Portugal's top wine spots. Taking its name from the Dão river, its best reds are based (as here) on Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo) and Touriga Nacional, two of the main Port grapes. (Memorably-named Bastardo is also one of the permitted varieties in Dão.) The region's wines are sometimes compared to Burgundy's, with both being subtle, elegant and made for the table.
