Pago de Cirsus Oak Aged 2016

Navarra, Spain

Aged for six months in a mix of French and American oak, this Merlot (50%), Tempranillo (30%) and Syrah (20%) blend resembles a richly-flavoured Rioja Crianza with it's full body, dark fruit and soft wood spice. This is fairly rich on the nose - dark berries and blueberry to the fore with toasty charcoal and even a hint of hay - but pleasantly fresh and fruity on the palate, with blueberry and blackberry and soft, sweet tannins on the finish.
Pair up with cheese ravioli, cured Manchego or Roquefort.
Pago de Cirsus is an elevated single estate outside the village of Ablitas in Navarra, with 135 hectares of southerly vineyards planted with Merlot, Tempranillo, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and small grain Muscat. The average yield per hectare is intentionally reduced to around 4 metric tonnes, much lower than what is required by Navarra's control board, resulting in excellent quality grapes and elegant wines with good body and powerful structure. The distinctive and eccentric modern castle tower that fronts the winery and cellars can be seen from miles around, and the attached hotel and restaurant are worth a visit for the views alone.
