This is for lovers of rich, oaky whites, full, powerful and unctuous.
Tropical fruit integrates beautifully with aromas of vanilla, oak spice and almonds in this rich, oily Chardonnay, barrel-fermented and aged for a further 9 months in French oak. The palate is ripe, full and rounded, with a finish that doesn't want to end as it unlayers mango, orange peel, vanilla and white pepper. Fabulous!
Perfectly suited to creamy fish or chicken dishes but sensational with duck a l'orange or roasted guinea fowl.
Pago de Cirsus is an elevated single estate outside the village of Ablitas in Navarra, with 135 hectares of southerly vineyards planted with Merlot, Tempranillo, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and small grain Muscat. The average yield per hectare is intentionally reduced to around 4 metric tonnes, much lower than what is required by Navarra's control board, resulting in excellent quality grapes and elegant wines with good body and powerful structure. The distinctive and eccentric modern castle tower that fronts the winery and cellars can be seen from miles around, and the attached hotel and restaurant are worth a visit for the views alone.
