Superb brick-red appearance with clean, sweet aromas, luscious, velvety body and silken flavours of dried fruits, exotic spices, candied nuts and citrus. Huge length and concentration, just magnificent!
Can be served lightly chilled as an aperitif or paired with good chocolate or coffee-based desserts.
Colheitas (col-YATE-a) are aged Tawny Ports made with fruit from a single vintage ('Colheita' means 'harvest' in Portuguese). Legally, Colheitas must be wood-aged for a minimum of seven years, although in practice they tend to mature for longer than this. They are bottled ready to drink, and should be drunk in the following year or two. The label carries both the vintage (2005 here) and the bottling date (2016 here). Colheitas are rare: comprising less than 1% of Port production, there is even less of it produced than there is Vintage Port!
This Colheita is made from traditional Port varieties Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão, Tinta Roriz/Tempranillo and others. Residual sugar is 113 grams per litre.
Niepoort is an independent family business that dates from 1842. After 5 generations it is headed today by the high-profile Dirk Niepoort. Some of Niepoort's grapes are trodden by human foot in traditional granite lagares/troughs.
