Gassac 'Faune' Chardonnay-Viognier 2016

Languedoc & SW France, France

Buy Now:

Pale lemon-gold hue with a gently-fragrant nose of stone fruit and tree blossom, while the succulent, honeyed palate is redolent of juicy pears and apricots. Round, pillowy texture, with lovely balance, restraint and elegance. A super effort!

Drink on its own or pair with grilled pork chops and sweet potato mash.

Variously described as “Lafite in the Languedoc” (Gault & Millau), “the only Grand Cru of the Midi” (Hugh Johnson) and “exceptional” (Robert Parker), Mas de Daumas Gassac has consistently been the Languedoc gold standard for the past four decades. The 80-hectare, organically-farmed estate is located deep in the sultry Midi, but enjoys a temperate microclimate as a result of altitude, which gives the wines a lovely deftness of touch.

Viognier is an aromatic, low-acid grape that is planted throughout the French south, although its most famous rendition is the small and expensive appellation of Condrieu in the northeren Rhône. After decades of decline, it is now enjoying a revival as a respected niche variety. The wines tend not to be oaked and are generally for early consumption.
