Le Chene Rouge Bourgueil 2014

Loire, France

Buy Now:

Boisterous and bold oak-aged Cabernet Franc from the left-bank Loire commune of Bourgueil.
Deep brick red in colour, the aromas resemble cherry pie dropped on a forest floor, an intense, insane medley of sour cherries, sweet plums, smoked meat and dried mushroom, veneered with a light sprinkle of violets and pink peppercorn. Not for everyone - if you prefer your wines light and fruity, stay away! - but as an accompaniment to rich French dishes or a strongly flavoured cheeseboard this excels.
Bourgueil is often made from 100% Cabernet Franc (like this wine), locally called Cabernet Breton, with up to 10% Cabernet Sauvignon permitted. Limestone soil produces wines with a dusky red hue, whereas those grown in siliceous soil take on a redcurrant shade. Bourgueil wines have a floral and fruity bouquet, which becomes earthy as the wine ages. These wines age splendidly in the bottle, keeping for up to 20 years.
