Reticent and tight initially, this fine French Syrah unfurls with time to reveal an intoxicating, multi-faceted bouquet rich with smoky leather, blueberry and garden herbs - wow! Medium bodied, with milk-chocolate tannins, balanced acidity and sumptuous flavours of cherry jam and graphite minerals. Classy drop.

Decant for 2 hours and enjoy with mutton hotpot and root vegetables.

In 1964 the Lavau family founded a company that produced wine from contracted grapes and then sold it on in the bulk wine market. Years later in 2000 Frederic and brother Benoit Lavau took control and the boys totally changed the focus of the operation, deciding to start bottling their wine under the Lavau label. In a complementary move, they partnered the business with Château Maucoil, a 40-hectare estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Crozes-Hermitage is an appellation in France's northern Rhône valley. In an average year the region produces more wine than the seven other northern Rhône appellations combined. Ninety percent of the AOP's wines are Syrah-based reds, with the rarer Crozes-Hermitage blanc being made from Roussanne and Marsanne - two white grapes that are also permitted for use in the red version of the wine.
