Landskroon Pinotage 2015

Paarl, South Africa

Buy Now:

South Africa's signature grape, many examples can be underwhelming but not this. Aged for 12 months in second-hand French oak barrels, this is medium to full-bodied, lush, soft and smooth on the palate, with integrated flavours of black plum, raspberry, vanilla, oak and just a hint of barbecue smoke. Serve up with red meats or game, or a summer barbie.
Winemaking at Landksroon dates back to the 17th century when French Huguenot settlers came to the Cape to develop the fledgling wine industry started in 1655 by the first commander of the new colony, Jan van Riebeeck. Among the newcomers was Jacques de Villiers, a winemaker from Niort in France. In 1874 his great-grandson Paul bought a portion of the original Landskroon farm, which today comprises more than 200 hectares of vineyards.
Four members of the de Villiers family remain involved in the business and current cellar master Paul de Villiers is a member of the ninth generation carrying on the proud family tradition in winemaking. Paul’s wines have won numerous awards including Diners Club Winemaker of the Year in 2000.
