Rich, opulent and powerfully oaked - this gets 18 months in mostly new American oak barrels - this is reminiscent of the blockbuster style of Shiraz more synonymous with South Australia. Hugely aromatic, with sweet blackcurrant and creme de cassis aromas, oak spice and pencil shavings, the palate is chock full of sweet tangy black fruit, with layers of savoury, spicy and herbal elements that will have you sniffing the glass long after the wine is gone.
With careful cellaring, will continue to evolve for up to 10 years from vintage.
Winemaking at Landksroon dates back to the 17th century when French Huguenot settlers came to the Cape to develop the fledgling wine industry started in 1655 by the first commander of the new colony, Jan van Riebeeck. Among the newcomers was Jacques de Villiers, a winemaker from Niort in France. In 1874 his great-grandson Paul bought a portion of the original Landskroon farm, which today comprises more than 200 hectares of vineyards.
Four members of the de Villiers family remain involved in the business and current cellar master Paul de Villiers is a member of the ninth generation carrying on the proud family tradition in winemaking. Paul’s wines have won numerous awards including Diners Club Winemaker of the Year in 2000.
The estate's plantings comprise 80% red varietals and this is reflected in the portfolio, with the weight, intensity and complexity of the red wines stepping up in line with price. The Paul de Villiers range are the amongst the best we've tasted from anywhere at this price point - for lovers of rich, oaky, opulent reds, they're an absolute treat.
