This is where Merlot starts to get really interesting. Aged in a mixture of new and second-hand French and American oak barrels, the result is a rich and full-bodied Merlot, packed with dark berries, plum and dried fruits, and laced with oaky spice and suggestions of cedar and cigar box. Drink on it's own, decanted, or with roast beef and all the trimmings.

Winemaking at Landksroon dates back to the 17th century when French Huguenot settlers came to the Cape to develop the fledgling wine industry started in 1655 by the first commander of the new colony, Jan van Riebeeck. Among the newcomers was Jacques de Villiers, a winemaker from Niort in France. In 1874 his great-grandson Paul bought a portion of the original Landskroon farm, which today comprises more than 200 hectares of vineyards.

Four members of the de Villiers family remain involved in the business and current cellar master Paul de Villiers is a member of the ninth generation carrying on the proud family tradition in winemaking. Paul’s wines have won numerous awards including Diners Club Winemaker of the Year in 2000.
