La Cartuja Priorat 2014

Priorat, Spain

Buy Now:

Boasts a highly-perfumed bouquet of dark berries and violets, and a feisty, grippy wash of blackberry, stony minerals, tar and cayenne pepper, with a brisk, smoky finish. Phenomenal intensity, structure and precision.

Decant for two hours and pair with Cuban roast chicken or smoked baby back pork ribs.

La Cartuja is made from estate-owned, organically-grown (not certified) Garnacha/Grenache (70%) and Cariñena/Carignan (30%) grapes, cultivated at 250m altitude in classic llicorella (slate and quartz) soils. The maceration and fermentation are relatively brief, and the maturation is in French oak barrique and vat for 6 months.

Priorat is a small but illustrious Catalan DO (Spanish wine region) whose wines - never cheap - have become even more sought after since the turn of the century. When you taste a Priorat, you are tasting not only a grape but also a place, as the mineral flavours of the terroir jostle with varietal character. If 'wine is liquid geography,' Priorat is one of the best examples of how a region’s vineyards are manifested in its wines.
