Muscadet is made from Melon de Bourgogne grapes grown at the western extremity of the Loire Valley, around Nantes. Muscadet is under-appreciated by most wine drinkers and so offers extremely good value. It's somewhat unusual in that "Muscadet" is the name of the wine, but not the name of either the grape or region.
Muscadet Sèvre et Maine is the best known of the Loire's four Muscadet appellations; 80% of all Muscadet is born here. Sèvre and Maine are two minor tributaries of the Loire, which converge just outside Nantes.
Many Muscadets state the words "sur lie" on the bottle or label, indicating that they have been aged for a few months on their lees (spent yeast cells), a technique that imparts welcome depth and weight to what can be a lightweight wine.
