Rioja, Spain

Inky-purple, with a fine bouquet of crushed blackberries, plush new leather and fragrant sandalwood. Very intense, glossy palate, with deep flavours of cassis, cocoa, mint and orange peel. Polished, complex finish and indulgent. Brilliant!

Decant for 3 hours and enjoy with Beef Wellington, roast lamb or Manchego cheese.

Horizonte is a blend of hand-harvested Tempranillo (80%), Garnacha and Graciano from mature vines aged 40-70 years. The cool fermentation took place in large oak and concrete vats, before maceration for 21 days. The juvenile wine matured in French oak barrique (a fifth of which is new) for one year prior to bottling.

Exopto was founded in 2003 by Bordeaux expat Tom Puyaubert, who had originally moved to Spain in his capacity as salesman for famous French cooperage (barrel maker) Saury. In fact Tom continues to work selling oak barrels in parallel with his ambitious project of crafting high-end Rioja. His estate comprises 10 hectares that are subdivided into 15 'micro parcels'. Depending on the plot, the vines (which are usually 'en vaso', or bush-trained) might be anywhere from 30 to 90 years old.

Sunday Times

Ernie Whalley

"I adored this Rioja from the minute it presented its garrigue-style nose. Lovely expression of dark plums, mulberries and wild blackberries. Long finish." *GOLD MEDAL*

The Wine Advocate

Luis Gutierrez

"...seamlessly-integrated oak and fruit that has a silky texture and great balance...better than average for the vintage."

Decanter

"Perfumed with roses and violets and smoky oak. Youthful flavours on an attractive, fruity palate... highly enjoyable."

Food & Wine magazine

"A modern label for a modern style, well liked by the tasters... Lots of luscious layers, a wine to cradle and savour slowly."
