Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Rustic, characterful red that shows a fragrant, spicy nose and appetising flavours of juicy redcurrant, oregano and lapsang souchong tea. Perky and brisk, with attractive finesse, balance and digestibility.
Chill lightly and pair with pasta arrabiata or meaty calzone pizza.
Sangiovese di Romagna is the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna’s best known (non-Lambrusco) wine. The sprawling production zone stretches from Bologna to Rimini, and there are four styles: (1) Sangiovese di Romagna (standard); (2) Novello - think Beaujolais Nouveau; (3) Superiore (as here!) - grapes grown in best areas; (4) Riserva - aged before release. Sangiovese di Romagna - often the 'house red' in countless 'red-checker' Italian joints of yesteryear - is less acidic than Tuscan Sangiovese (Chianti etc), and better value.
