Goru 38 Barrels 2013

Jumilla, Spain

Full-on stuff that's ripe, sweet and long with unreal flavours of blackberry, toffee and liquorice, with and delicious flickers of orange fudge and clove. So big, powerful and smooth - an amazing wine!
Almost a meal in itself but if you're looking to match with grub go for something rich and meaty like sticky ribs or duck in plum sauce.
Ego Bodegas' chisel-jawed proprietor-winemaker Santos Ortíz has created this luxurious Spanish red blend from a very strict selection of his best Monastrell, Syrah and Cab grapes. The grapes macerated in their juice for almost a month to extract every ounce of colour and flavour, and the young wine is finished then for 12 months in new French and American oak barrels.
JUMILLA is a wine region in Murcia, SE Spain, where conditions are hot, dry and tough - summer temperatures of 40°C are common. Some grape varieties can thrive here though, as there is a lot of lime in the soil, which helps retain what little moisture there is; and also because of the high, inland plateau, which offers occasional respite from the furnace-like heat. Eighty per cent of the appellation's vines are heat-seeking Monastrell/Mourvedre.
