Gordo Monastrell-Cabernet 2014

Yecla, Spain

Boasts an opaque ruby-red colour along with absolutely gorgeous scents of jammy red fruit and sweet spice. Full, opulent and expansively flavoured, with rich raspberry, caramel and cinnamon hints, and a sinfully-smooth, velvety mouthfeel. Sensational!
Lovely on its own or with blue cheese, meaty stews or spicy pulled pork.
Gordo is winemaker Patrick Mata's pet name for his father, Jose; and his wine pays tribute to the Mata winemaking heritage, stretching back over four generations. Gordo's 'wild west'-esque design is actually a replica of one of the family labels from the late 1800's. Gordo is a blend of organically-farmed, old-vine (almost 50 years old), high-altitude (713m) Monastrell (70%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (30%). The style is roble, with maturation for 3 months in 2-year-old oak barrels.
Yecla is the smallest wine region of Murcia, SE Spain, where the classic style is a rich, lusciously fruity red made from mainly Monastrell/Mourvèdre. The climate here, 80km inland, marks the transition from Mediterranean to harsh, arid continental. Water-retaining limestone soils plus altitude (400-800m) combine to make winegrowing possible. The baking conditions are perfect for late-ripening Monastrell, which makes up 80% of plantings.
