Finca Muñoz Cepas Viejas 2013

Castilla, Spain

Buy Now:

Structured, authoritative wine made from the fruit of some of the bodega's most venerable old plots. Savoury, complex and reminiscent of black cherry liqueur, leather, muscovado and bay. Polished, suave tannins and a luscious, decadent mouthfeel.

Decant for an hour and enjoy with Beef Wellington or lavender and garlic lamb.

Vines can live for a century or longer but after the first twenty years of life they start to gradually give smaller crops. Old vine - 'cepas viejas' here - is common wine label term to show that a wine comes from these notably old plants. The idea is that older vines, all things being equal, produce a smaller volume of more concentrated, flavoursome juice. Though not legally controlled, 'old vines' would generally be at least 25 years old.

Tempranillo is Spain's most important quality red grape. Versatile, it is capable of making both inexpensive, simple reds meant for early consumption and profound offerings that can last for decades. Though common as a varietal wine, it is often blended with Garnacha, Mazuleo (i.e. Carignan) and (in Rioja) Graciano. Synonyms include Tinto Fino (Ribera del Duero), Ull de Llebre (Catalonia), Cencibel (La Mancha) and Tinta Roriz (Portugal).

If you haven't tried it you simply must. It's Metallica's 'One' meets Sinatra's 'My Way' - dark, chaotic and mind-bending but with masterful control, elegance and silky finesse normally reserved for top-end wines 3 times the price.
