Crémant de Loire is the Loire's appellation for traditional/Champagne-method fully-sparkling wines from Anjou, Touraine and (especially) Saumur. Created in 1975 to provide a quality alternative to the increasingly pricey wines of Champagne, Crémant de Loire was joined the same year by the new Crémant de Bourgogne AOP, and by Crémant d'Alsace the year after.
Chenin Blanc is the main variety used in Crémant de Loire, although a big spread of other grapes may be employed too - Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Pineau d'Aunis, Grolleau and Cabernet Sauvignon. Surprisingly, the Loire's star grape Sauvignon Blanc is excluded. The blend here is Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc.
