Exopto Rioja 2015

Rioja, Spain

Buy Now:

A stunning effort - glossy, authoritative and brimming with fruits of the forest, mouthcoating chocolate, baking spices and cool mint flavours. Massive body, with awesome richness balanced by perfectly-judged tannins. Be still my beating heart!

Decant for an hour and enjoy on its own or with slow-roasted lamb with alioli and saffron potato purée.

A Rioja rara avis in which Tempranillo (30%) takes a back seat to high-quality but little-seen (fickle!) Graciano (60%). The élevage (or 'upbringing' - the wine's development and maturation) is completed by 18 months in classy French oak, half of it first-fill.
Bodegas Exopto (Latin: to desire) is a project founded in 2003 with the hope of recovering old bush vines cultivated on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria, at over 500 metres altitude. Exopto is owned a run by Bordeaux expat Tom Puyaubert who works also as a salesman for the famous French cooperage (barrel makers) Saury.
Alcohol: 14%
Style: Big, velvety, fine
Closure: Cork
Drink by: 2027

The Wine Advocate

Luis Gutierrez

"Great traditional-modern Rioja, just plain great - bravo!"

Wine Spectator

"Cherry, plum and cassis fruit flavors mingle with toast, spice and liquorice notes in this expressive, harmonious red."

Wine & Spirits magazine

Year's Best Rioja

"The floral, juicy flavours have a cool generosity, folded into an earthy layer cake of tannins. Open this now to enjoy its freshness, or wait a decade for the oak to recede. Exceptional."
