Champagne, France

Rich and inviting, with a beautiful pale-gold colour, fine bubbles, and gorgeous flavours of white peach, caramelised almond and hawthorn. The succulent palate has superb finesse, minerality and length - truly divine nectar.

Chill and drink on its own or try with a fresh endive, Stilton and walnut salad.

Most Champagne is a blend of red grapes Pinots Noir and Meunier, and white grape Chardonnay. When only the latter is used the style is called 'Blanc de Blancs' (white from white), as here. Most Champagne is 'non vintage', meaning that it is blended from grapes harvested in a number of different years. In exceptional years, however, a higher-quality, more long-lived, 'vintage' (millesimé) wine is made, like this one.

Founded in 1859, Duval-Leroy is today run by Belgian Carol Duval-Leroy, who took control of the estate after her husband Jean Charles died suddenly in 1991. As well as presiding over a long period of growth and success, she has also left her mark on the wider champagne world, becoming in 2007 the first woman ever to be nominated chairman of the AVC, Champagne's winemakers' association. Carol's four sons work alongside her.

"The quality of Duval Leroy has soared and for a few years now it has been possible to claim that no other house can beat it for consistency of style - not even the greatest of the great."

"A good, citrussy Chardonnay with clean and elegant ripe fruit, and a salinity that is very delicate but has powerful drive. A classy Champagne."
